Foulad Yazd Group of companies was established in 1980 by Mohammad Ahramian with establishment of a workshop near the city of Yazd. First products included deep well pumps used primarily in agriculture. Further upstream expansion of activities led to addition of spiral bevel gear, steel couplings and steel bright bars to the product mix of the companies. The second phase of expansion of activities begun by entering the steel production sector with setting up one of the first private steel re-rolling mills in Iran for production of rebars. Following the success of this strategy Yazd Rolling Mill continued to increase its foothold in the steel sector by adding an EAF meltshop, Wire rod mill and a section mill at its facilities in Yazd during the years 1997 to 2012. Currently with a combined rolling capacity of 1.1 million tons of long products and with a work force of over1500 people YRM is one of the major industrial concerns of Iran.
The third phase of expansion of the company is based on moving upstream the steel production chain with aim to become the first “ore to product” steelmaker in Iran and the Middle East. Based on this strategy YRM in 2008 started its investment drive in a number of acquired iron ore concessions around the country starting with a sizeable exploration, core drilling and small scale extraction activity. Following the encouraging results of those studies there are now plans underway for production of 1.5 million tons/yr of Iron ore concentrate and DR grade pellets in the first phase of production. The next phase of expansion will include setting up a direct reduction iron plant in order to complete the full production chain using captive iron ore to the final product.
